It always starts right away and doesn't hessitate or complain.

The earlier series (290, 343, 390) has a different deck height than the later 304, 360, 401 series. It has enough power for me (so far) and runs pretty well. I have a 360/TF999 combination with Edlebrock performaer intake and carb and get an average of 12.3 mpg.
This new AMC engine defied categorization to a degree in that it was m… 401 steel crank, 360 cast. I would also look for a complete running 360 out of a FSJ so you can take everything needed; brackets, intakes, manifolds, carb, wiring harness, etc.

Oh, another thing to consider w/the 360 and especially the 401 is w/the increased power the components you put behind it will need to be up to the task. I have no complaints about the 360. AMC stamps the engine displacement on the sides of thier block in large numbers so its easy to tell what you getting. Differences are only in displacement and whether the flywheel is internally or externally balanced.

Obviously the 360 and 401's have more power and probably about the same gas mileage (all poor, avg btwn 8-16).
You can put 304 heads on a 360, but performance will suffer, and with a bigger cam, there may be valve/piston clearance issues.
Summer blends act like it's 'cut' with donkey urine. In Kalifornia we have our own "special" gasoline that makes me run much less spark advance on my FS Jeep.

So what makes them different? Don't have a ton of info for you but I do know that the AMC 304, 360, and 401 are all externally identical. The 304,360,390 and 401 AMC engines are all the same block. The cylinder bore was 4.08 inches and the crankshaft stroke was 3.44 inches. The 390 and 401 are great engines but you will start getting into overheating problems with the stock Jeep radiator. How can I visually tell the difference? The 304 and 360 are very similar except for displacement and the valve sizes. Plus bottom end torque is no contest. 258, 304, 343, 360, 390, 401. I'm not saying even a stock 304 won't scream, just don't know how much power it will make in STOCK form at high rpm, so why twist it that hard? You will also find that your gas milliage will be pretty close to the same if not a little better depending on how you drive it. It leaks like a mutha (front main seal and others). It went 6800 with ease.
Kinda eats off the wax, attracts dirt, and causes a fire hazard. A buddy of mine spun 6800 rpm with a stock long block 304. Visual difference between AMC 304 & 360?? the 401 also has higher nickle content in the block = stronger block. Unless your going to drag race I would stick with the 360.

Going from a I6 to the V8 will require changing mounts and likely a different transmission, driveshaft mods, etc.
