read it sewer scene book excerpt
Buy him two and he'll be happy to tell you about the horrors of being responsible for a public restroom. I think, yes, in a few big ways, this scene does accomplish something outside the narrative. However, that seems to be a theme of the book. No, because I had to read outside the text to understand what was going on. Some people will find it intolerable, and the book will be ruined for them because of it. By now, the latest adaptation of It has been out for a little bit. I buy the idea that it serves a purpose.
What I DON’T buy so much is that it never crossed King’s mind that OTHER people would take it that way, and I’m sort of surprised that nobody who proofed the book questioned the scene. The act isn’t one that’s intended to create new life – it’s meant to bond people together through time, which speaks to something we’re not quite saying about the character It when we compare It to Beverly. The scene would have been a little easier on the stomach if all of this had been spelled out a bit more. The book dealt with childhood and adulthood—1958 and Grown Ups. In fact, it bugged me so much I was making notes in the dark while watching it (using the light under the table--I was at Alamo Drafthouse). For better or worse, the discussion of this huge, 1100-page tome would be overshadowed by the discussion of this one scene. King has a lot of great books. This is good. Would it fly now? They accomplish this by having sex with each other. I thoroughly believe that if this book were written today, this scene would be rewritten if not omitted entirely. I’d be willing to argue that her act of killing ultimately steals and repurposes life force to fulfill a need to reproduce, which means that she’s mocking the process of sexual reproduction, or at least bastardizing it to achieve something she can’t do normally. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the book’s pivotal sex scene. It also says a lot about King's gendered characterisation. She’s having babies, which is problematic because it’s explained in the book that she’s the polar opposite of The Turtle – she’s not the creator, she’s the destroyer. First and foremost, the largest complaint is the sexualization of children. Simply put, two reasons: there are perverts in the world who would be freeze-framing the hell out of this, and the notion still makes us deeply uncomfortable. In fact, taking it a step further, Bev can’t recall everything that happened in the sewer after the Pennywise showdown, which falls perfectly in line with the memory wipe of the 1950s in the book.
Sex bonds us to another person: you must inform former partners in the instance of disease, and you very well could wind up with a souvenir nine months later that sticks around for quite a while (I believe the little ditty starts out, “Eighteen years…”). Likewise, one of the past euphemisms for orgasm is “the little death,” which further emphasizes the balance of death (destruction) with conception (creation). Some people will hate it, but like the book in spite of it.
They were able to defeat It years later because of their unbreakable bond. Intuitively, the Losers knew they had to be together again. I read the first three books of The Chronicles out of sequence; I read the Illearth War first (book 2), then The Power that Preserves (Book 3) before getting my hands on a copy of Lord Foul's Bane (book 1), which may have insulated me from the protagonist's vile act early in the first book that convinces most people to check out of the series. Mostly because they removed much of Bev's power, especially in the sewer, and about a dozen other reasons I enumerated in a review on my blog. Historically, audiences have freaked out at the idea of a young girl getting down; examples include So why are we so hung up? Please enable JavaScript on your browser to best view this site.Let’s start with the book. I thought it got kind of tedious towards the end, especially with the sex scene between adult Bev and Bill. And the group starts falling apart. The evil businessmen could have been thwarted without someone picking up an axe. By that I mean, we are presented with a scenario where something that's generally positive is possible because of something terribly, horribly negative. Spoilers from here forward (although you can skip to the final section if you're curious about whether or not you should read The sex scene certainly stood out because of the degree to which it's taboo, and because it demonstrates, more than anything else, a problem that could have been solved in a different, less vile way. I buy that, at the time the book was written, Stephen King thought this was the best way to accomplish what he wanted to accomplish.
