Anchor texts and series of texts connected to them are accompanied by a text complexity analysis and rationale for purpose and placement in the grade level. Each unit begins with a Big Idea Blast that gives students their first opportunity to draft a response to the driving question of the unit. For example, in Unit 1, in the Skill lesson on Theme for “The Monkey’s Paw,” students define theme, participate in a whole group discussion that helps them understand how to identify theme in a work of fiction, and independently answer the following questions in the Your Turn section of the lesson: “Which of the following states an important idea that may be the theme of the selection?
